A Brief History – Silver’s Enduring Power

Since ancient times silver has been used as a highly prized immune defender and dependable preservative.[1], [2], [3] In ancient Greece, Rome, Phoenicia, and Macedonia, silver was used extensively to help control immune challenges and spoilage.[4], [5], [6] Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine,” taught that silver aided tissue repair. Around 400 B.C. he listed as a notable topical aid the flowers of silver by itself in the finest powder.[7] In 69 B.C. silver nitrate was described in the contemporary pharmacopoeia.[8] Twenty-three hundred years later (1897 A.D.) silver nitrate began to be widely used in America.  Why Milleniaä?

Carl Nägeli (1893) first coined the term “oligodynamic effect” (from the Greek oligos = few, and dynamis = power) to best describe how extremely low metal ion (e.g., silver and copper) concentrations exert potent and meaningful biological actions.[9], [10] In a nutshell, oligodynamic silver is low concentrations of silver ions, and is arguably the best form of silver you can buy.¨[11], [12] On the other hand, the biologically meaningful actions of heavy metal salts are only obtained from much higher concentrations when taken internally, but at a cost.
